If you believe Bjorn Rorslett archive page here the AF-Nikkor 35-70 mm f/2.8 D is an extremely good lens, and the AFS-Nikkor 24-70 mm f/2.8 ED G FX is utterly stunningly gloriously marvellous. ie the old lens is extremely good, but the new lens is about incomparable. This is possibly the most glowing technically well supported lens review I
I have just picked up a second hand Nikon 24-70 f2.8 ED lens. It appears to be in pristine condition both outside and optically. Calibrating the lens with Focal I'm seeing quite a wide variation in the AF fine-tune adjustment at the wide and long ends: -5 @ 24mm and -13 @ 70mm.

Beej. Same price today in 2017. Checked eBay and Amazon etc. Could have done better but only because of less shipping.

24-70mm f2.8 zooms are the workhorses of photo-journalists, portrait and wedding photographers, and almost every manufacturer has one in their portfolio. For owners of Nikon FX-bodies the two main choices are Nikon’s own AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED from 2007 and Tamron’s new SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD announced in 2012.
The "reported" increased edge sharpness of the new 24-70 f2.8 VR is not accurate. Except at 24mm, at f2.8, the older lens has a little better sharpness center to edge. And for landscape use, one will likely not be shooting 24mm at f2.8 -- at least I don't. Even at 24mm, by f4, the older lens is once again sharper center to edge.
3. Dec 15, 2021. #1. I am undecided on a new Z 24-70 f4 or a new Z 24-120 lens to use with a new Nikon mirrorless Z camera. I think I would use the extra "reach", but based on prior posts and test results for the dismal Nikon 24-120 f3.5-5.6 and the 24-120 f4, I think a new Nikon Z 24-120 is a real challenge for Nikon with its 5:1 zoom ratio.

Note that the rest of the image is extremely high in contrast, meaning there is very little veiling flare. Try as I might, I couldn’t get anything worse than this in a real-world image. The 24-70mm f/4 just has very impressive flare performance. uXUIEt.
